Let’s Read Plays challenge.

I've decided to participate in Let's Read Plays challenge, as:
1) I always feel I need to read more Shakespeare or reread some of his works in the original
2) I generally like plays
3) It is a good distraction from all the chunky books I usually read

So the plan is to read at least one play each month, according to the monthly topic. And here are the plays I have chosen:

  • Nov '12 - Shakespeare's Tragedy: Macbeth by William Shakespeare
  • Dec '12 - Shakespeare's Comedy: Twelfth Night by William Shakespeare
  • Jan '13 - freebie: A Streetcar Named Desire by Tennessee Williams
  • Feb '13 - Shakespeare's History: Henry V by William Shakespeare
  • Mar '13 - Greek: Oedipus the King by Sophocles
  • Apr '13 - Shakespeare's Comedy: A Midsummer Night's Dream by William Shakespeare
  • May '13 - Shakespeare's Tragedy: Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare
  • Jun '13 - Oscar Wilde: An Ideal Husband by Oscar Wilde
  • Jul '13 - Other author: The Seagull by Anton Chekhov
  • Aug '13 - Shakespeare's Comedy: As You Like It by William Shakespeare
  • Sep '13 - freebie: The Three Sisters by Anton Chekhov
  • Oct '13 - Shakespeare's Tragedy: Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare

I will read more, of course, if I'm in a mood. I'll also read non-English plays in Russian (especially as there are two Chekhov plays!), but as the challenge language is English, I will write about them in English. Three of the plays will count for my Classics Club list, which is also good :)

  1. Most of your Shakespeares are in my list too. And looks like we're going to digest An Ideal Husband together in June :) For "other author" I will read Chekhov too. Oh, I can hardly wait to kick off the event!...

    1. Yes, I've had a look at your list ;) Actually, I've read most of the Shakespeares on the list, but in the translation (they were good ones, but still). I always use a dictionary a lot for English Shakespeare, and it is quite irritating at times, but this time I'll do this! I've also read all the Wilde's plays in English, but they are so great, that I will happily reread one of them again. And if I grab my book of plays, I will not be able to stop and will probably read them all again =) It's a shame for me that I, being a Russian, still haven't read all Chekhov plays, so I'm going to fill this gap, and I hope to like it too, as I usually like his writings. So I'm also looking forward to November! =)

  2. Today I decided to join in as well. I'll post my list tomorrow, though, because I'm busy with my read-a-thon today. :) I should really try to fit in Checkhov. There are too many plays to choose from! I've already read a lot of the Shakespeare, but not since I was around 16 years old. It's probably time to read them again. :)

    1. Yes, I was monitoring your read-a-thon =) Good work, BTW! I had problems choosing the plays, but one is a minimum, you can have more of them each month! =)

    1. It was hard for me too, especially the decision whether to read something new and not so well-known, or to reread the masterpieces. I've tried to keep the balance. Good luck with yours!
